In a world where most of us are feeling increasingly stressed and isolated, and with our sense of community rapidly going the way of the rotary-dial telephone, Fred and Pete's--an old-time deli and lunch counter imbedded in an aging New Jersey strip mall--offers a rare place of refuge and companionship (not to mention a great Swiss cheese omelet) where people really do know your name (or at least your nickname). We used to have places like Fred and Pete's in most of our communities, but sadly, a lot of them have gone under, unable to hold their own against the chains and national franchises. This book was written to capture the story of Fred and Pete's, and the extraordinary people on both sides of the counter who make it what it is, before it's too late. It is a love story in the truest sense of the word.

Fred and Pete They're All Nuts Paul Jellinek 9781456308834 Books

Yes! This is not only fun to read, but reminds us of ourselves, our friends, and our favourite places. Paul Jellinek has brought the real people from Fred and Pete's to the whole world, with honesty and without intrusion. He writes each character as they actually speak and allows them to be themselves and openly express their personal opinions from their own experiences. We start to know them and how they relate to each other. I got involved in the "Out Front" argument about how to get to Iccara, and I now certainly know how to get there from Fred & Pete's, just as Paul describes doing by car ... except living in remote coastal BC, Canada, I needed the help of maps.

Fred and Pete's is all the more endearing, because we, up here, have such places. Many of the cafés, pubs, and restaurants are locally owned and operated and you can go there and will certainly meet many people whom you know and can join. In one café, novels have been written and local educators are volunteering time to teach Syrian refugees English, so that they can find work here in Canada. In another café, an adventurer into the wilds, by kayak and on foot, presents his glorious wildlife and scenic photos on a big screen, all day on a weekend, in exchange for donations to local charity.

OK. We're the same but different. When our "Yacht Club" ( ... a pub gathering for conversation, where no one actually owns a yacht!) has a big argument about how to get to Iccara, two or three cellphones quickly appear in the race to ascertain who is correct.

I must go now. I am starting "Fred and Pete's: They're Still Nuts". "Nice try Jellinek" (quote from page 1). I will acquire the 'War and Peace' time to go to Fred and Pete's again. Sometimes I have stress and sometimes I have things to do that I find uninspiring. After those, I will reward myself with a visit to "Fred and Pete's: They're Still Nuts." Also, I have a mystery to solve. Who is "Morgan" the Amazon reviewer and waitress? Does she appear in the next book?

Fred and Pete They're All Nuts Paul Jellinek 9781456308834 Books Reviews

This book had more depth than the first book.
It had better stories and more characters. I really enjoyed it.
If you live in any small town you probably have a place like this there.
Once again, as in his Promise to Mary, Paul Jellinek quietly and sensitively portrays individuals--their life histories, their views of the world, their current situations. Of course what brings it all together is the magnet called Fred and Pete's Deli, where people (mostly older men) who have much in common find a place to relax, eat, and talk (sometimes argue), but where those who have less in common with the others are also welcome and form part of a network that includes former patrons of Fred and Pete's who have sinced moved away. Leaves me wondering a bit wistfully whether there is a Sue and Kathy's somewhere.
As the years go by & times change, the old ethnic neighborhoods of the past are quickly disappearing. The people described in "Fred & Petes" are a core group of elderly gentlemen who share a past together in a formerly Italian neighborhood known as Chambersburg in Trenton, NJ. Very few of its original occupants remain there today & those who fled the area for a "better" life, to the man have come to realize that for a better house, they lost the most valuable thing life has to offer ... a real sense of community & one another. The guys @ Fred & Petes have recreated that lost atmosphere of beach chairs on Hudson St. in the Burg with beach chairs on Rt. 33 in Hamilton Twp. For anyone who ever lived in the Burg or has any interest in the ideal way to create a positive sense of community, the book is a heart-warming treasure.
How does a modest book of character sketches involving ordinary people leading ordinary lives become something extraordinary? When it is the product of Paul Jellinek's eye and ear getting to the core, or if you will, soul of the folks he engages. Like Jellinek's previous book, PROMISE TO MARY, the essential humanity of the people encountered is key to the overall feeling of well being one gets upon reading. A fast read, FRED AND PETE'S has the local color and wry observations characteristic of Jellinek's writing. These folks are certainly not leading lives of quiet desperation--the American dream lives on, even if it has had to change with the times. And for anyone concerned with the demise of the work ethic, rest assured it lives on in New Jersey. This is no one dimensional narrative, but an entertaining and uplifting view of this life we're all in together (even though "THEY'RE all Nuts").
In a time when memories of the "good old days" are being closed, moved, and replaced with updated furnishings, Paul Jellinek has captured the warm friendliness of a place to get a cup of coffe, something to eat, meet old friends and meet new ones. As Paul takes his usual place for the interviews in a booth at the back, we can smell the delightful aromas of food being prepared with the customer in mind. The hubbub of folks as they come and go with back-slapping hellos and goodbye's. One can identify with some of his "characters" as they tell of hard times and the the good memories. "Fred and Pete's" is a place for friends to keep in touch and Paul captures this almost verbatim. "it is a love story in the truest sense of the word".
