The story was great. One I enjoyed greatly. The writing was good. It did make a promise, or two, I felt it didn't keep,. That's commons in a lot of books, however.The thing that kept this book from the fifth star, was the pacing. The pace of a story about the bloom, of a young woman's first love, should take the entire book. From a strange curiosity, to fascination, finally to love, that comes to fruition, in the final act.
Adeline, went from laughing over her sisters' silly preoccupation with guys, to swooning over silvana within the first three or four pages, of the story, robbing me of the journey, I specifically bought this book to take.

In this novel author French takes us to a world of barons, manors, and where women have few rights. As the book begins, Sebastian and Delfina have welcomed Rafael and his sister Silvana to their manor. Rafael is there to woo their eldest daughter, Irena,. Their middle daughter, Adelina has watched a string of suitors court Irena,. However, as pleased as Irena is by Rafael, Adelina is just as pleased by Rafael's sister. Silvana is aware of Adelina's interest, and quietly courts her, aware that love between women is not accepted here. What follows are some lively dinner table conversations between Delfina and Silvana on religion and the nature of God. As Adelina becomes more enamored with Silvana, her parents notice and disapprove. This is a novel of lust, love, honor, and desire. It is French's second novel, and it is even better than her first. All of the characcters are fully fleshed out, and the story is lively and enjoyable. .
Fruit of the Golden Vine by Sophia French is a wonderful novel that’s a little difficult to explain, but is so easy to love. Part historical fantasy, part romance, part feminist treatise, I was delighted and entertained from the first page to the last. It is so elegantly and simply written that it reads like a fairy tale. Make no mistake, however—this is not your typical romance, and I hesitate to even call it a romance. The I-love-yous come early and easily, with courtship and getting to know each other following for both couples. The romance between Adalina and Silvana develops in tandem with Raphael and Irena’s, highlighting how heterosexual love can flourish easily while queer love needs to stay in the shadows in some societies.
Fruit of the Golden Vine is fantastic and I highly recommend it.

This second book from Ms French is a most enjoyable romance. It is a well written, rollicking tale of a two adventurers, a brother and a sister, who lose their hearts to two protected sisters in an age of sword play and chivalry. The prose is sharp and the love story between the two women touching and exciting. I can recommend this novel as a great read.
