This is the story of one man’s quest to spread the good news of Jesus to a remote tribe in the upland jungles of Laos.
A New Heart for the Htin Don Durling Sally Durling 9781463724801 Books
This account of Don & Sally Durling's missionary adventures in Asia was interesting on several levels:Firstly, Don's hard-work upbringing on a dairy farm in southern Michigan was very near to where my wife grew up shoveling manure and bucking bales on their Lime Creek Road dairy farm.
Secondly, his graduation from the missions program at Grand Rapids School of the Bible & Music (my wife also graduated GRSBM and I attended three semesters), then of Don's signing up for a year with a faith mission children's camp in Cuba. "It was by far the worst year of my life" Don recounts. How tragic. Tropical ocean breezes instead of long cold Michigan winters, fresh mangoes, bananas and avocados, beautiful beaches, snorkeling, and fantastic fishing possibilities nearby might tempt me to announce a missionary call to the Caribbean ... but I'd definitely want to skip suffering a "thoroughly wrecked self-image" and shattered self-confidence from being "the target of transferred hostility from a very frustrated senior missionary". So sad that professed brothers and sisters in Christ, even on the front lines of bearing a message of good news and reconciliation to the outside world, can behave so badly.
Thirdly, his joining the Army & serving in Korea, availing himself of the higher education opportunities available through the GI Bill in a field directly applicable to missionary ambitions, returning to Asia employed by the University of Michigan, meeting his American bride on foreign soil ... and finally returning to his call to missionary work.
Not directly assigned to work with the diminutive Htin people, it was interesting to read how the Durlings were drawn to them, and how over prolonged years of labor many souls from this most downtrodden and humble of the people groups in the area where they served, eventually came to faith in Jesus Christ.
The numerous photos in the book were generally interesting and a welcome accompaniment to the text.
I do recommend "A New Heart for the Htin", especially to young college students intending to embark on full-time missionary service, for the insights they might gain from Don & Sally's experience respecting the difficulties and challenges particular to foreign missionary work.
